Jeet
Kune Do is a revolutionary martial art that acknowledges and develops skill in
the conservative, dynamic and spontaneous environment of interpersonal
warfare. Put another way, Jeet Kune Do
directly addresses the fact that the action of a fight tends to occur in the
simplest possible way with no unnecessary embellishment and that this action is
always changing, according to necessity, without repetition.
Combat
training derived from this observation and designed along the following parameters
enables a practitioner to be extraordinarily versatile in his or her response to an
attack:
·
A philosophy of
openness and clarity in the study of combat, emphasizing simplicity,
directness, economy and relationship.
·
A tactical analysis
of combat, outlining various categories of available options.
·
A physical structure
and kinesiology that maximizes adaptability and efficiency in its application.
Jerry Poteet was internationally recognized as one of the world’s most accomplished disciples in Jeet Kune Do. I had the great fortune to have been Jerry’s
private student for about 12 years, from 1984 to about 1996 (actually, there
was no real end point—we hung out a lot and often trained on the spur of the
moment).
He
was my teacher and mentor but most importantly, he was one of my dearest friends and I
will miss him forever. I am very proud
to be one of his Keepers of the Flame.
